Hamster escape! :)

Question
Dear Karen,
I have two syrian hamsters that I bought in December of 2005, and up until about a few days ago I had them together in one big cage. I recently noticed some cuts on the top and side of my hamster, Gaven's, head and seperated them over the weekend. On the first night my other hamster, Charlie, escaped out of a small hole I did not notice. ( I have a medium height wood board in the walk-in of my door so they cannot wander the house if they escape.) Luckily I found Charlie in a small cage that I put him in when I clean their cage. My mom thought that he may have escaped to look for Gaven. I did not think so, and covered the whole. I swapped the hamsters' cages, so I could see which was better for what hamster. This morning I walk into my room and Gaven escaped out of the cage, from the same whole Charlie did. I though it was too much of a coincidence he escaped, and I wonder if he was trying to look for Charlie. Even though they are both male syrians, is this possible?

Answer
Hi Shelby,

It could be possible even though male Syrian Hamsters rarely get along when in the same cage. If they start fighting too much they should be seperated so that they don't hurt each other. If you have to seperate them, you can always put their cages close together so they can see one another.

Thank you for your question and best of luck!
