New Gerbil

Question
Our family recently bought a really sweet gerbil. She seems to great around kids and people in general. The problem is that last night she bit me. Just a small bite, didn't hurt and it didn't break the skin. I'm worried that maybe we've overwhelmed her with too many people or taking her out too much. Is this the case and how can I prevent her from biting.

Answer
Hi Di,

Sometimes if they are nervous or feel stressed/dangered they will nip you as a warning. This doesn't tend to break the skin and doesn't hurt too much.

I have never really found a way to stop them doing it, mine only do it very occassionaly if they are feeling grumpy or don't want to be handled. The best you can do in this situation is to put her straight back in the cage and her leave her alone for a few hours. Try not to keep picking her up and putting her back in a short space of time as this won't help, but at the same time you do want to be holding at least once a day so she can get used to you!!!

Other than taking it slowly, and letting her get used to there isnt a lot more you can actually do,
I hope this helps in someway.
Charlie.
