Question
I recenly got a dwarf hamster who is about 19 days old. I know that they are nocturnal animals but mine seems to be more active during the day than at night. she comes out th eodd occassion at night. goes to sleep around 3pm and once again comes out of her house ever now and then. I'm not sure if this is normal or not... please help me

Answer
Hi Nicole

It isn't that unusual for a dwarf female to be out and about during the day.  In theory hamsters are nocturnal, but dwarf hamsters do often rally during the day with short bursts of energy.  Females are also a lot more active generally than males and tend to be awake during the day, or at least they will come out and investigate any sounds.  It is possible to train a hamster to rally at a more sociable time than late at night.

I wouldn't worry about this at all.  For her, this is normal behavior.  When she gets older (19 days sounds incredible young to have been allowed to re-home her as she is still a baby - are you sure she isn't 19 weeks old?? - usually they are not re-homed until they are at least 30 days old - I never re-home until they are 6 weeks old, so she is just a baby) she may well change her habits and settle into a different routine.
