Question
Hi. my hamster was running around for most of the night but the next day i checked on it and it was lying on its side with its paws curled up so i tried waking it up and it moved a bit then this morning i checked again and it was cold and stiff i looked it up on the internet andd i dont know if it is dead or hibernating but it keeps on moving aroiund what is going on?????

Answer
Hi Sophie,

A hamster will go into hibernation if there is a sudden drop in temperature (in your house), this does not happen much though, since the temperature in homes usually remain about the same year round. You can bring a hamster out of hibernation by wrapping it in a dry washcloth and holding it until it starts to revive. Sometimes it will shake just before totally coming out of hibernation.
If holding the hamster does not bring on any changes, then it is more than likely getting close to passing.
