how can you tell if a winter white hamster (female) is happy or not?

If she is happy she should be quite bright, running around, keeping busy etc.  If she sleeps all the time and looks dull then this is not normal behaviour.  They are normally quite nosey and tend to come out to investigate any unusual noises in the house. Dwarf hamsters often like lots of different places to sleep so it is good to put some bedding in different areas of her cage, and also put in several places that she can make her nest.  She should also be interested in eating - this is usually a good sign she is happy, as is if she enjoys running in her wheel.
