-----Question-----
Hi

I have had my hamster for 6 days now, and i put in a potty litter training in his cage but he does not use it at all. Instead, he pees near his bed(up the petting zone in critter trail cage). So I cannot put anything to prevent him of peeing there. Right now, i am cleaning it every day. I also did put urine odor control where he pees but he just tosses it away down the tube. (he is 5 weeks old). What should i do?

I have a little problem with my hamster being VERY lazy. He wakes up LATE. Yesterday he woke up at 10:00 a clock. What should I do?

Also he was sniffing my and he smell a little extract of the food that i hand fed him and he try to bite my palm. But I removed my hand a little to quickly and he went threw the tube to go explore the next cage( I think he got scared). What should I do?

How do i pick up a hamster?

When I try to handle my hamster, he gets agitated. anything to solve that?

Also, when I put the food on my hand, he does not go on my hand completely. And also when he takes all the food from my hand, I am scared that he will smell the extract of the food on my hand and bite me. When i finish hand feeding him, wouldn't he smell the food that i just
finished giving him on my hand?

I got my hamster 6 days ago and he is used to my smell, he ate from my hand a couple of times, but to handle him, i a scared to hurt him, and i do not know exactly the right way to do it. Can you send me the steps on how to handle him and tame him please?

Sounds like your a first time owner. I have a look out post for my ham as well and thats where he chooses to sleep, as well as use the potty. What the makers of the hamster potty and the potty litter don't tell you is hamsters cannot be trained to use the potty litter. It works on the premis that hamsters tend to use the bathroom in the same corner of the cage, when you know where that potty area is, you put the litter there. Because your hamster, like mine, doesn't use the corner, but his own bed, the hamster potty litter will never work for your cage setup. Just clean out that look out tower every week to prevent odor. Hamsters can be stinky little animals, and short of keeping a cleaning routine, there are NO shortcuts to cutting smell.
Hamsters are nocturnal animals, meaning they will sleep all day and play at night, so your hamster is not being lazy at all. I rarely see my hamster awake to tell you the truth. Also do not wake your hamster to pet or play with it, just be paitent and wait untill it awakens.
Your hamster was not being mean when it tried to nip you, my hamster likes to nibble my fingers when I handle him, and it doesn't hurt. Your hamster could have just been seeing what your hand was, hamsters help identify things by nipping them harmlessly.
To handle a hamster, use your whole hand to support the hamster when you lift it up, and if it squirms harshly, just let it go, its not worth hurting your hamster to pick it up. Your palm should be on the hams back side and your fingers should be under the hamster when you first lift it up, but dont grip too tight, when the hamster is up and out of its cage, then you can cup your hands and play with it however is comfortable for you both. Just renember no squeezing the hamster.
Your probably handling your hamster when it was sleeping, and you woke it up. This is common with new owners. Just leave the ham alone until you notice it moving around on it's own, then it is safe to handle it. If the hamster is still getting agitated when you touch it, you just have to try hand feeding it fresh food until it gets used to your hand being around it.
Yes, your hamster will smell the food on you, but you can't fear the hamster biting you or you will never be a successful owner. If the hamster nips a little dont move quickly, it will stop even if you take your hand away slowly. Fast movements startle hamsters, so avoid that at all costs.
You wont hurt the ham as long as your dont squeeze it. There are no set steps on taming hamsters because every hamster will tame differently. In the future when buying a hamster, spend some time at the pet store handling different hamsters, and pick the tamest one right off the bat. You can't be afraid of a little hamster bite, or you will never become a good owner. We all get nipped every so often. Remember to only handle the hamster when it is awake, this will drastically cut down on bad experiences for the hamster.

Hope I've helped

Its gonna take a while before your hamster feels comfortable enough to just walk onto your hand. If food is offered of course your hamster is just going to take the food and go, mine does the same thing. I wouldn't bother waiting until your hamster does this on it's own, as it actualy may never deside to do it. Just pick up your hamster when you want to interact with it.
