Answer
Hi Keyla,

When a female hamster comes into heat, that means she's primed to mate.  (It doesn't matter whether or not a male hamster is around her.)  She may produce a musky odor.  Also, when you stroke her back, she would "freeze up" and her tail would stick up in the air.

I would avoid taking your hamster on a flight, or on any long trip (unless it's a permanent move, and then obviously you would have to take her with you).  Hamsters become stressed when they're being moved, and stress can lead to any number of illnesses (including the often fatal wet tail).

For your new hamsters, first feed them regular dry hamster mix (I like Hartz Bonanza).  You'll need to introduce them to fruits and vegetables very slowly.  (Too much feeding of fruits and vegetables leads to diarrhea.)  Begin by feeding the hamster only a small piece of fruit or vegetable twice a week.  After about 3 weeks, give your hamster a small piece of fruit or vegetable 3-4 times per week.  Then, after about another 3 weeks, you can give your hamster a small piece of fruit or vegetable every day.  Here's a list of safe fruits and vegetables (from petwebsite.com):

Alfalfa
Apple (seedless)
Asparagus
Avocado (skinned and seedless)
Banana
Basil
