Syrian hamster behavoir question...

Question
I have I Syrian hamster, where we bought him they called him a "honey bear" hamster. He has a problem, he will not stand to be touched at all, and certainly not picked up. When you put your hands near him he will either bite you, or play dead. When you pick him up, he screams and wiggles out of your hands. Why won't he be touched by people, is this normal, is there anything we can do to change that behavoir?

Answer
Hi Chrissy,

Some hamsters will act this way. The best thing to do is start a taming process.
First, give your hamster a few days to get used to his new home and surroundings (just make sure he has food and water, do not try and pick him up or pet him).
On the 4th day (when your hamster is awake), sit or stand by the cage and talk to him in a soft voice. This will give him a chance to get used to your voice and your scent. Do this for the next couple of days.
On the 7th day, Start putting your hand inside the cage (make sure you always wash your hands before handling your hamster). He will eventually come to your hand and sniff it. Do not try and pick him up or pet him at this point. Also continue to talk to him. Do this a few times in the evening while he is awake, then add a treat to your hand (like a piece of apple or carrot).
On the 10th day, try to pick him up. Do not force him and make sure he sees your hand so you don't startle him. When he comes into your hand, slowly bring him up and cuff your other hand over him. This will make him feel more safe and will also protect him if he tries to jump.
The taming process can be long and may need to be repeated. You have to gain your hamsters trust. Don't give up.
I hope this helps and if you have anymore questions, please write again.

Thank you for writing and best of luck!
