Getting a New pet

Question
I'm considering getting a gerbil or a Robo Dwarf hamster. Which do you think would suit us better? I am going to care for them with my 14 year old brother (I'm 12)and we have enough space for them to run around, although they'll probably be kept in a tank/ cage most of the time. we used to have fish, do you think we can keep them in a aquarium (30 gallons)? One more thing, should we get one, or two of either to keep each other company? Thanks.

Answer
Dear Jenny,
thank you for your question.
A 30 gallon would work well for both a Robo and a pair of gerbils (they are social and must be kept in pairs of the same sex). But a Robo dwarf is not a pet that can be handled much, they prefer to stay in their tank. They are great for watching, but if you want a pet that you can touch and play with, then I recommend getting gerbils.

They will get tame very fast, especially when you offer treats on your hand at the same time every evening. Gerbils also enjoy time outside their cage as a rule and they often are awake during the day, hamsters usually get up late and not at all during the day.

Here's a great website on gerbil care:

I hope I was of some help to you
