Hamster in labor?

21 11:14:53

Question
Hi,
I know my hamster is pregnant and I know it is her 19th day of pregnancy. She is a Campbell's Dwarf, she hasn't birthed yet. She was bleeding a bit two days ago and some yesterday. She started getting fatter two days ago, and she has made a nest, hoaded food, and drank way more than usual today. I know how to take care of the babies, but can you tell me what the signs are that she's in labor? Or maybe can you tell me if she may go into labor soon?-Sierra

Answer
Hi Sierra

The standard gestation period for a dwarf is 18-21 days, so she must be getting ready now.  You don't always see the signs - more often than not I've just found babies in the nest the next day (if so, be careful not touch them.  If you do accidentally, gently put your hand over all of them so that your scent is everywhere).  If you do witness labor, often the hamster keeps arching its back and can make a strange sound. There is some blood, but shouldn't be a huge amount.  The mum usually does a pretty good job of cleaning her young.  Usually labor is very straightforward - if there are any complications it would be advisable to contact a vet.

Hope this helps
