Question
My hamster frank was a very placid hamster from the day we had him. Then my nephew left the cage door open and he got out.He was out 3 days when the bucket trip caught him but he is different he will not let you touch him and is going mad in his cage trying so hard to get out.He has never been treated badly i treat him like one of my children. What can i do to get the old frank back?

Answer
Dear Debbie,
thank you for your question.
You might have to go to the whole taming process again, but it will probably take less time because Frank does know you and will remember you.
If hamsters have escaped once from their cage, they will try over and over again and they remember very well where they got out. Lots of entertainment, like interesting toys (cardboard boxes, toilet paper rolls and egg containers, either empty or filled with bedding and food), branches and leaves (hazel, oak, beech, birch, willow and fruit trees) and food hidden in the bedding might help. What size is his cage? I think that the minimum for a Syrian hamster is 40x20x20" long, wide and high, for dwarfs 30x20x20. They are so very active and love to run and dig, most of the cages sold in pet shops are just way too small for them. Old tanks can be bought cheap (garage sales or ads in the local paper) and, with a screen lid, make good hamster homes as long as they are not higher than wide to ensure proper ventilation.
I hope I was of some help to you
Jennifer
