pregnant????

QUESTION: i bought 2 syrian hamsters 2 weeks ago they are now roughly 10 weeks old.when i got them we were not sure if they were boys or girls....they were the same size wen i got them but now the one i think is a female has gotten a lot bigger than the other hamster....is it pregnant?????
ANSWER: Hi Patrick,

It sounds like your hamster may be pregnant.  First, since they are Syrian hamsters, you'll need to separate them immediately.  Move the smaller hamster (since the larger one may be pregnant) into a new cage.  They will need to stay in separate cages, because Syrian hamsters cannot live together; they will fight violently.

ANSWER: Hi Patrick,

A Syrian hamster will be pregnant for 16 days.  (Sometimes a Syrian won't give birth until the 17th or 18th day.)  A couple of days before she is due, you'll have the clean the cage and fill it with plenty of Aspen or Carefresh bedding.  (Avoid Pine and Cedar beddings, which are dangerous.)  Also, remove the wheel from the cage.  And, lower the water bottle so that the babies will be able to reach it.

Remember, it's very, very important that you not touch the babies at all until they are at least 14 days old.  If you touch the babies before they are 14 days old, the mother may stop feeding them.

Hi Patrick,

I would have no way to know that.  You'll just have to guess.   Around day 10 of the pregnancy, she will start getting bigger, and her nipples may be more noticeable, so that should help you determine how far along she is :)
