Hamie squeaking

Question
QUESTION: Hello, me and my husband have two goldhamsters. We have one male and one female and we keep them in seperate cages right next to each other. Awhile ago we started hearing the female squeaking, she used to only do it at night every once in awhile. But now she is doing it more often and throughout the day when she is awake. We were thinking that maybe she is ready to mate and is trying to get the males attention? But not sure what that meant!?!
Thanks,
Natalie

ANSWER: Hi Natalie,

How old is your female? Are you wanting to mate them?

QUESTION: Hi again,
No, I think it would be fun to mate them and I did buy a hamster that ended up being pregnant and had a litter and it was fun to have them and take care of them but we're not interested in doing that right now. Sometime in the near future I think we would like to try to though.
I'm not sure how old she is exactly. I think they are the same age though, we bought them together and when we first got them in December we thought they were both female and then discovered in January that one was male. I'm not sure if that could help at telling how old they are or not. But the males body has really changed and he has gotten a lot bigger, she has not though. I'm more just curious as to why she is making this noise. I know they squeak when they are fighting but she has her own cage.

Answer
Hi Natalie,

Female hamsters will also make a squeaking noise if they are upset, bored or agitated about something. Try giving her a little more exercise, like putting her in a hamster ball for about an hour every evening. Also try giving her something extra to chew on, like a wooden stick, a chew treat or even a dog biscuit.
Just in case you would like to know, from what you have told me, I am guessing your hamster to be around 8-10 months of age. Most hamster that come from pet stores are usually somewhere between the ages of 2-4 months old (some even older), just incase you would have more questions in the future. Knowing the age can really be a lot of help in some cases.
