hi, my hamsters testicals?

QUESTION: My hamsters butt got really big the other day. I asked someone els and thy said it was his testicals. Is that what you think they are? He is a male black bear hamster named joie.   Do they ever go away? And also, i have a golden hamster named eddie, he is a boy too but his butt isnt anywhere as big as joie's.

ANSWER: Hi Sam,

Yes, a male Syrian hamster's testicles are often quite large, especially as they get older.  Since they are located underneath the tail, it appears as if their bottom is large.  They won't ever go away, because they're a part of a male hamster's anatomy, but they do swell occasionally (which is what you saw the other day).  Also, they vary in size, which is why your other hamster's bottom doesn't appear to be as large.

QUESTION: Thank you, and also one other thing is that online i seen that other hamster expert were saying that it is a boy version of heat? is that true? and another is that his but is not just large, but very  hard. Is that normal?

I apologize for not getting back to you sooner - it has been a very hectic day.

It's true that when a male hamster is aroused, the blood flow increases to his testicles, which is why they sometimes appear larger.  At this time, the testicles can feel hard.  When he is not aroused, the testicles should feel soft.
