Question
Hi there!  Today at a flea market, I noticed an aquarium on a jumble table.  To my dismay, it contained a very small, very hot, very miserable hamster!  The owner said that she was selling it because another of her hamsters just had babies, and she was 'pretty sure' this one was a female.  The poor thing was on cedar chips, in direct sun, with a bowl of waste-fouled water and no food. How's that for responsible pet ownership?  But I digress.  It's safe and comfy now.
First of all, I need to know how old this hamster is.  It's about 2 1/2 inches long and almost as big around as a film canister.  It's not a dwarf--I know that much but that's about all.
Second, is there any way I can tell FOR SURE whether it's male or female?  If it's female it may very well be pregnant, but again, I don't know how old it is or how old they have to be to breed.
Sorry for rambling, and thanks for your help! :D

Answer
HI Melissa,
There is no real way to tell how old the poor little hamster is but if you say its small it may be fairly young. To tell if it is male or female, look near it's tail. If there are two large bulges then it is a male, if it is not there then it's a girl. Good luck and if you see her getting rounder, drinking and eating a lot, she may be pregnant.
