Question
i am 17 years old i have a female teddy bear hamster. She got pregnant and had 16 babies!!! sadly we are down to 9 little guys!! the mother wont stop eating them! I've gotten advice from a lot of people telling me to give her more protein like bread with peanut butter and whole peanuts and even dog food!! NOTHING is helping. so i guess my question to you is what can i possibly do to save my last 9 baby hamsters?? can i feed them and keep them warm myself?? I'm kind of fond of them already and don't want them to die! if you could answer me back id be very happy thank you!!

Answer
Sometimes you could be doing everything right, but if the mother is young and overwhelmed (16 pups is a lot for even an older mother) she will resort to eating her pups. Young mothers need to be left alone, if the cage is in a heavy traffic area like a living room, move her cage into a part of the house where people are not likely to pass regularly, like in a guest bedroom. She will feel less frightened if you leave the lights off where she is at as well. Try not to clean the cage or move anything in the cage for as long as possible, and just keep her bowl filled with food once a day. The less you disturb her the better your chances. If she still chooses to eat the last 9, you tried your best. As I said, 16 is an overwhelming number to even an experienced hamster mother, and it's their instincts to eat the young they can't provide for.
