Natural death? Is he suffering?

Question
My Syrian, Mojo, is 2 1/2 years old and I think he is dying. He hasn't eaten in 2 days, but I have gotten him to drink some water. He's not playing, or hardly even moving out of his house, and he's very "wobbly". There are absolutely no other signs of illness; is this a natural demise and if so what do I do?! Is he in any pain and how long is this process? I'm going to miss him sooo much!  :(  I really need an answer so that I can make my Mojo more comfortable. Thanks...

Answer
Hi Stephanie,

Yes this is a natural demise. I don't believe he is in any pain and this process can take anywhere from a week to two weeks. It really just depends on him. The best thing you can do is hold him, talk to him and keep giving him your love to let him know you are there. To help keep him more comfortable you could lay him on some cotton balls while he is in his cage. This will help keep him warm too.
I can tell by the age of your hamster that he has had a very fullfilling life and you have done a great job at caring for him.

Thank you for writing and so sorry.

      Hi Stephaine,

Yes the nosebleeds are normal. In my experience (and your hamsters age) this generally means the end is getting near. You can try giving him water with an eyedropper and see if he will eat some diced pieces of apple or carrots. I know this is a very emotional time for you, for I have been through the same thing several times and each time I have said to myself "no more hamsters" but then I see one and their cute little faces and my heart just melts. I believe hamsters bring a lot of joy to their owners lives and someday when you are ready your heart will open up to another hamster who will enjoy your love and kindness just like i'm sure Mojo has.

Thank you for your feedback!
