Question
My girlfriend and I bought our "son" Squishy in January of this year. He is such a joy. He has always been a very loving, cuddley, friendly hamster. He loved to be played with and would run to our hands when we put them in the cage.
Well just the other day I went to pet him and he bit me. My girlfriend gave it a try and he bit her too. He's now very skiddish and nervous. I don't know what happen. No one else can get in our room and we haven't done anything to make him scared of us.
The only thing that I can think of is that the day this started we had gotten him a new and bigger cage. Before that he had been in a small cage with open bars all around. This cage is the plastic kind and is more closed in. We thought he'd like it because there was more room and more stuff to do. And he does seem to like it but he's now very mean to us.
We both love him so much and if there is anything we can do to get back the old Squishy please let me know. Thank you so much for your time.
Sincerly

Answer
Squishy is a fun name for a hamster! Where as I've never heard of a hamster becomming mean because of a cage change, this may very well be so. It might be that he doesn't like the cage, or he is still adjusting. The other, more far out possibility is squishy is sick. Major, unchaning behaviours that come about are usualy a result of a sickness. If squishy doesn't change, or show signs of change within a week, I would try switching back to his old familiar cage and see if that helps. Keep me posted!
