Babies!!!

Question
We have 3 dwarf hampsters that we got when they were about a month old.  We got them about a month and a half ago.  We were told they were all female but on Sunday we came home to 2 babies.  One dead and the other still living.  I was so afraid the others would kill the living one I tried to figure which was the mother. I wasn't sure and I ended up keeping them all together. Well the other baby also died.

Since then I have done alot of searches and I think one is a male and the other two female.  Which I think is a correct assumtion seeing as we now have more pups this afternoon.  They had made a nest in the wheel, which they often do, and I cleared it out this morning.  Now I worry the babies will be cold.  Can I leave all the hampsters in together?  I removed the one I believe to be the male...should I keep them seperate?  Should I give them napkins or toilet paper to make a nest?  I was so upset on Sunday that the babies didn't make it and I want to do all I can to ensure the new ones survival.  I even let my kids read your web site so they would know how important it was to stay away from the cage.  Thank you so much for your help.

Answer
Heya,
its ok to leave all the hamsters in together, dwarfs are social animals and will help out with the babies.
its up to you whether you leave the male in or not, if you don't want more babies, its best to remove him, but if you don't mind more babies (you can always give them away or sell them to pet shops) you can leave him in.
give them some more material to make nest, toilet roll is not very good becuase it will get stuck in cheek pouches, kitchen roll is great, or paper or tissue paper...just rip it into strips, don't use fluff bedding becuase it can get caught in limbs. the babies will probably be kept warm by the parent, but its always good to have bedding. its best really not to clean the hamsters out until they are 2 and a half weeks, this cuts the risk of the mother eating the babies.
 i hope this helps!!
