Question
Hi Shawntiah, i have a female syrian hamster, she seems fine but she has completely stopped using her wheel, not even when i am sleeping, and i want her to use it, how would i do that? and she keeps biting the cage bars and making them really thin, how do i make her stop, i have already put toilet roll in there for her to chew on. she uses her toilet to wee in but will she use it to poo in as she currently poos in her house where she sleeps.. also she stores all her food up in her pouches, and takes it up to her house where she sleeps and when will she stop this. she never sucks or eats the salt mineral vitamin thing i have got for her, she just sands on it and bites cage bars, should i take the salt thing out? how often should i change food and water. regarding handling, i have only handeled her a few times and have u got any tips on it, i have had her for about 3 months. what would the perfect cage size be, mine is:
Lenght- 44cm
Depth- 28cm
Height- 34cm

Also is it ok for me to move the cage in the evening to my living room so its warm and she can get used to daily noise and people as it is cold in hamsters room, also is it ok for me to keep cage in living room throughout winter and then back in normal room or shall i keep it in the normal room, it is a bit cold in there but not much.
any tips and general help i would appreciate.

Thanks so much
PS: Sorry for the long question, i am only a beginnger on hamsters

Answer
Hello Aadam,
many hamsters actually choose not to use the whell as exercise after a while. My hamster very rarely uses his wheel. It's not a bad thing, some hamsters just don't like the wheel. Also, about her chewing the bars, it sounds like she needs a lot more chew treats to chew on. To make her stop chewing on the cage, I would rub vinegar on the bars. Also, you don't need to take the salt lick or mineral wheel out. The cage you have is a comfortable cage size is fine, and you can move the cage to a warmer area of the room. The warmer area will be nice, but make sure it's not too loud as hamsters need to sleep.

Also, don't be so nervous about holding your hamster, it takes time and patience for a hamster to trust you. Bribing the hamster with yummy treats like peanuts is a good way of getting a hamster to come to you. Also remember to change the bedding weekly and when she puts stuff in her cheek pouches that is completely normal and it's what they normally do to store food. Change the food and water every day or every other day. I hope I have answered all your questions please feel free to contact me anytime.
