Hamster with dry skin

Question
Hi Sheila
I have a hamster that is very old, I'm guessing close to 3 now. I adopted him about 1 year ago from a shelter at (they told me) 2 years of age. I've had the little fella to the vet, he is covered in dandruff but his skin does not look sore. The small animal vet told me it is not fungus, or mites, but just dry skin. He offered a shampoo to try to help. I did give him a little cotton ball sponge bath, which actually seemed to help for a while but it's coming back again. I didn't know if I could put a touch of olive oil on him??? Any suggestions as to what I can add to his diet?? His weight is good, he's active, and not itchy but just looks dry! His fur isn't falling out, but it is thin like you would expect to see in an acient ham. Looking for your suggestions. Thanks for your time.  :)

Answer
Hi KJ

Good to hear from you again.

Is this a Syrian hamster?  If so, whilst the vet is saying it isn't mites, I would still be tempted to treat with ivermec. You can get the small animal antiparasite medicine made by Beaphar -they do one that is safe for Syrian hamsters.  It is applied to the back of the neck.  Don't apply it is the skin is raw, but if it is just dry, then it might be worth trying just in case there is some parasitic invasion.  All hamsters have mites to a certain extent but when they are old and/or their immune system becomes compromised they can become over-run.

If this is a dwarf, then you can't use this medicine on him as the dose is far too high for him.

Have you tried aloe vera on his skin?  if not it might be worth trying this - either straight from a plant, or you can buy it in a safe form.  If there is any sign that the skin is raw, then you can apply teatree cream which is sold in pet shops - this is a natural antiseptic.  You can also apply evening primrose oil - you can buy this in capsules or a dropper - if in a capsule, pierce one and apply a few drops.  you'll need to throw the remainder of the capsule away, and use a new one the following day.

He is doing very well for a 3 year old - I've never got any of my hamsters to this age, so well done for that.  Anything you can do to make him a feel a little more comfortable is a good idea.

Hope this helps.

Sheila
