Question
We had purchased a hamster for my daughter and it died, the pet store told us they were having issues with the vendor, we went through four that died.  So the pet store brought in a few hamsters, my daughter chose one, they kept her so they could taker her to the vet but before they could get her to the vet, she got wet tail.  The vet said she had Giardia and they gave her meds.  They kept her for a week and the vet gave her a clean bill of health.  We brought her home and she was home two days and we found she had wet tial again.  Is Giardia something that can be removed with meds or is this something that will remain inher system forever and pops up from time to time?  We are still under the warranty with the store and they are taking her back to the vet but my daughter is so broken hearted because she has had five now and they have all been sick.  She is getting so discouraged.  Also is a product called 'Dri-tail' a good option?

Answer
the Christmas season is the worst season for hamsters and other small animals. with other kids banging on the cages and disturbing the hamsters it's no wonder they get sick when caring people like you take them home. Guardia is not something stays in their system. Your hamster probably got wettail again because it got stressed out being home.It does happen.
You know what a lot of people get sick Syrian hamster but they have great success with dwarf hamsters. Dwarf hamsters can deal with stress a little better and they don't get wettail like the regular big sized hamsters. I bought my hamster after Christmas and my dwarf hamster has been great joy. they stay small and a lot nicer than the bigger hamster. I know a lot of people that never had good luck with the bigger hamsters but when they had a dwarf hamster they had a lot of fun and the dwarf hamsters have a lot of character. Mine loves being in his big cage chewing on his treats. When you get your hamster leave him/her alone for a week before trying to play with them. Also, vitamin drops are a good way of helping your hamster out. Granola is a good way to help with wettail. People say giving hamsters granola helps them from getting it.I give my hamster a little piece of oats and honey granola. He loves it.
As far as dritail goes, there's only a 50/50 chance that it works. The vet is really the way to go, I wouldn't really try dritail. Here is a website with some fun facts about the dwarf hamster. On the website it says that they can be kept happily in groups, but I only advise that if you are willing to separate them the minute they start to fight. They also need a pretty nice size cage if you want to keep them in groups.
