Hi Hannah,

Syrian hamsters will fight violenty when they are placed together.  They are solitary in the wild, and they should also be solitary in captivity.  That's why it's recommended that you only keep one hamster per cage.

Dwarf hamsters, however, enjoy the company of others, so they should be kept in same-sex pairs.
