my hamster had a small patch of missing hair a while ago . it has gradually got bigger and im not sure what to do , hes syrian so i thought u might be able to help me . hes 3 so it might be old age i guess . his skin is dry and he struggles to run now he just hobbles around.                                                       please help. from lauren

Hi Lauren,

The fur loss is most likely a result of old age, and nothing to worry about.  You may want to give your hamster extra bedding, however, to make sure he stays warm.

In addition, the general slowing down is likely due to old age.  Three years is a long time for a hamster to live.  (Sounds like you've been doing a great job with him :)  If you notice signs of illness, such as a runny nose, sneezing, a dirty bottom, or lethargy, then you should take your hamster to a vet.
