Question
Hello i have 2 hamsters, Choxie and Cookie, both dwarfs, one spotted and one black. When we got them they were 2 months old and we put them together. I saw them mating three weeks ago and now they are about three months old. We got them at petland and they still didn't give birth. I think petland neuters them or something do you know? Also i am trying to teach my hamster its name but he won't take any fresh fruits or vegetables or anything that is not hamster food so how should i teach Choxie his name?

Answer
Hamsters cannot be neutered; it would be extremely difficult and entirely unnecessary. I am assuming they are brother and sister, and therefore should be separated. Brother-Sister mating can cause defects and other problems for the pups, just as it would for humans. Unlike cats and dogs, hamsters do not learn their names; they do not come when called. As for non-hamster food treats, fruits and vegetables should be given, but no more than 3 times a week. Another favorite is a tiny bit of peanut butter off of your finger. It's a great way to get them to know you and trust you. Never give them any kind of citrus, sugar, junk food, or processed food.
