QuestionHi Sheila
Our Syrian hamster is 2 years and 6 months of age. He has recently been un-able to open his eyes.
We would like to know if you think this is due to his age or maybe some kind of infection.
I look forward to hearing from you
Many thanks
AnswerHi Emily
Thanks for your question.
Hamsters have gland at the back of their eyes that secrete a reddish fluid that helps lubricate them. If a hamster is unwell or elderly they tend to secrete more fluid than usual which often results in 'sticky eyes'.
It is important for a hamster to open their eyes on a daily basis, therefore you should try and get your hamster's eyes open. If you get a clean cloth and soak it in warm water then gently wipe his eyelids and see if he can open his eyes. You might have to carefully help him.
Hamsters can develop eye infections, such as conjunctivitis, so make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after handling him as this is transferable to humans. It is impossible to know if he has an infection, but if when you get his eyes open they look sore, opaque, itchy the it would be worth getting a vet to have a look as they can prescribe eye drops which would make any infection more comfortable.
I hope this helps you.
Regards
Sheila
