My Gerbil has a bloody nose

Question
My gerbil has a bloody spot under her nose, and she seems to have rubbed all the hair off too. Why would this be?

Answer
Hi Patti,

Well there could be several reasons for this. Do you have a cage with bars? The most common thing to happen is that the gerbil will chew the bars quite often, which will actually cause the fur to rub off the top of the nose. (was the rubbed off fur on top or where the blood was).

This happened to me, and there isn't much you can do to stop it, unless you change the cage. As long as it doesn't look sore you don't need to worry too much.

The other thing it could be is lack of vitamin K. Nose bleeding is the best sign of this. Vitamin K is found in greens, which you should try and give in small amounts! This may stop the nose bleeding.

It may just be one or the other of these things, or it could be both of the things above!!

I hope this helps you, and let me know what happens or what you do!!
If you need anything else feel free to ask!
Thanks,
Charlie.
