Hamster skin disease

Question
Hi

Ourhamster is scratching herself quite a bit.  The hair on her chest is gone and she has scabs over her body.  She has been on an antibiotic but it seemed to work the first week but now she's getting worse again.

The doctor said it is not mites -do you have any idea of what she could have?  And what we can do to help her.

Answer
Hey, Denise.
If the vet said it's not mites, then it's probably some type of skin allergy.  This could be caused by the type of bedding she's using, or anything in her cage or outside her cage that she's allergic to.  The best thing to do in a situation like this, is to:
-first of all, if you're not already, use carefresh or aspen bedding only
-then, you should move her to a different room in the house, if possible
And hopefully, if she is allergic to something, she will recover in a couple of days.  If not, then you should take her to the vet again, and he will probably give her some medicine to relieve her itching, which will keep her from scratching.

Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask.  Good luck with your hamster and best wishes to both of you.
