Question
I HAVE A FEMALE AND MALE DWARF HAMSTERS AND THE FEMALE JUST GAVE BIRTH TO TWO PUPS YESTURDAY MORNING. I NOTICED THAT THEY WERE MATING LAST NIGHT. I WANT TO KNOW IF THAT IS OK? OR WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Answer
Hi,
Take the male out of the cage, as he may eat the babies. Sometimes they actually help care for them, but they often kill the babies, which you don't want to risk.
Leave the pups alone for at least a week after birth, and keep the cage in a quiet area, or she may kill and eat her own pups!
After 2 weeks, the pups start wandering. They have no eyes yet, but are very adventurous. Take any water bowls out the tank, or the pups could drown.
Hamsters can be weaned from their mothers at 4 weeks of age, but they are stronger and live longer if weaned at 6 weeks.
I hope this has given you a little info.

If you have any more questions, please ask.
Best of luck,
Kathryn
