My hamster might be sick

Question
Dear Heather,

I have a Teddy Bear hamster named Heather(that's why I picked you)and she has had three liters of babies! And it has been a/b three weeks...I think since we gave them away and she gets a little sad and lonely when ever they go so she might not be eating because of that (She's usually a good eater)and I can't tell if she has been drinking enough water or not and I just noticed  tonight that her poop is black instead of brown. Please tell me what this means. Please tell me what to do and if she'll be alright.

   Thank you,
        Kristen

Answer
Your hamster sounds like there isn't much wrong, they don't get depressed when their babies go since they are solitary animals, and actually force their young out of the burrow at a certain age in the wild. She may just be exhausted from rearing babies, but monitor her food intake. Black poop is one of the normal colors for hamster poop. As long as her water bottle is not blocked up, and drips water when you press the ball at the bottom, she would be drinking alright. If your hamster is refusing food, check her mouth to make sure her teeth aren't too long or chipped. If nothing appears wrong and she still doesn't eat anything, (even if she eats a little she is fine) only a vet can diagnose what is wrong.
