Buy from same store?

Question
Hi, Karen- thanks in advance for your advice! I had a male, black Russian hamster who developed a fatal tumor when he was 6 or 7 months old. When I start looking for another one, should I avoid buying from the same pet store? I was wondering if the commonality of this (genetic?) condition is linked in anyway to the breeder or breeding considerations, where they may be more likely to produce tumor-prone litters.

Answer
Hi Katie,

Tumors are common in hamsters, more so in Syrian females. I would suggest trying a different pet store, if only to ease your mind.
Most hamster breeders breed their hamsters for show, so if they have an unhealthy hamster, this hamster would not be used for breeding.
In my opinion, since tumors are so common in hamsters, I do believe it has something to do with genetics.
Here are some things to look for when picking a healthy hamster:
There coat (fur) should be well groomed and dry.
There should be no drainage coming from their nose or eyes.
Check their body, there should be no lumps or bumps.
Check their bottom, as well as the other hamsters in the same cage, it should be clean and dry, not dirty looking.
The hamster's breathing should not be labored or noisy.
The hamster should be alert, curious, and active (this may be a bit hard to test during the day being hamsters are nocturnal, but they should still respond).
