hi
i want to get a hamster syrian or dwarf i  12 years old. the only problem is that my dad wont let me get one because he thinks it will hold us back on vaction . can u tell me how long they can go without me there and if syrians are better than dwarfs.

Answer -
emin,

hello and thank you for your question.

syrian hamsters are better as handling pets, as dwarfs dont mind be left alone. so if you want a hamster you can tame easily get a syrian. either way, DO NOT leave any hamsters alone for more than 2-3 days. they will need an excersize wheel, plenty of water and food. if you leave him longer than a week his cage will be smelly, causing illnesses and his water will be stale, meaning he may not want to drink it and become dehydrated. also he will need to be kept away from animals such as cats.

the only other options are to take him with you or get a neighbour or a friend to babysit him while you are away, getting them to change his food an water, and perhaps if you are going away for more than a week, you could ask them to clean him out. tell your friend that hamsters are clean, tidy, easy to look after and they will only need to change his food and water, also if you buy an excersize ball, let them know to let him out in it for only 15-20 minutes each night at the most.

i hope you can work something out and give a hamster a happy home. if theres anything else you need to know before and when you get your hamster let me know.

Answer
hi emin,

as far as breeds are concerened you should get a syrian, they are more responsive and can be handled for longer than other breeds because they are so large.

go to google and look up syrian hamsters to be able to recognise one when you go to the pet shop.

and yes, you can keep your hamster in your room, thats where i keep mine. but hamsters like to knaw things. so if you get a cage with bars, its highly likely he's going to chew on them which is a loud and really annoying. so yes you should get a tank, a pet shop wil tell you the best size to get. or your could get the habitrail or rotastak cages, but beware, these are not cheap. and some compartments also come with bars.

when you buy the cage you will need:

paper bedding, do not buy the fluffy cotton
a water bottle
food bowl
sawdust
an excersize wheel
chew toys
a big bag of hamster museli
get an excersize ball, put him in it no longer than 15-20 minutes each night.

make sure you set up your cage before you bring the hamster home, leave him alone for the first 2 days as he needs to settle in his new house, and give me another shout when you are ready to start taming.

thank you for your question and please ask again.
