Bleeding Hamster

Question
Hi Sheila,
I have not been able to find a vet who can give me an answer about what is wrong with my winter white dwarf hamster, so I'm trying other sources now. Back in May I first noticed that she had either anal or vaginal bleeding so I took her to the vet and she got treated for a bladder infection. The bleeding cleared up so I assumed it was an infection. Then about a month later it happened again, so I took her back to the vet and asked what else might be wrong with her. They said she may have a tumor or something, but this was almost 6 months ago! Since this started she has been having a few days every couple weeks that she bleeds. I keep her cage very clean and she has no other behavioral symptoms. I have asked 4 vets now and they have no answers for me. I honestly feel like I'm waiting for her to die since I know bleeding is never a good sign!

Answer
Hi Laura

I honestly don't know what this is - but I have had the exact same thing happen to a couple of my hamsters - in fact one of mine at the moment is like this.  Sometimes the bleeding seems to go as quickly as it appeared with no logical explanation.

I'm assuming your vet examined her - as if she has got a tumor he would probably be able to feel it.  Hamsters can get uterine infections, but this tends to cause a creamy discharge rather than blood.  The fact that she is behaving normally is a good sign.  When she bleeds, does she sit hunched up at all?  Is she OK if you handle her during this time or does she become aggressive? When hamsters are in pain they usually sit hunched and don't want to be touched at all.

When she bleeds - how much blood is there?  Are you just noticing it on her bedding or can you actually see it coming out of her?

This must be very frustrating for you especially as you've asked so many vets.  I would be tempted to monitor her and if the situation gets any worse or if her behavior changes at all, then she should go back to the vet to be examined again - in which case they could try another course of antibiotics and/or give you some painkillers for her just in case.

Sorry I can't be more help with this - it is a real mystery.
