Then they are more than likely fighting. Syrian hamsters are solitary, they like to be alone in their own cages. Females are very territorial and they will defend it fiercely. The only time a male and female Syrian hamster will get along is when the female is in season (heat). If you do not want babies, then it is defiantly for the best to put them in separate cages. If you do want babies, then you can introduce the male into the females cage when she is in season (which is every 3-5 days). Leave him in for about an hour then remove him. Keep an eye on them to make sure they don't fight. If they do, then you will have to remove the male.
