how long does it take for my hamster to have babies and what do we need to do in the meantime

Hi,
If she is a Syrian hamster, the gestation period is 16 days exactly, but one or two days later is not uncommon. Give the female high protein foods such as scrambled eggs, boiled eggs or cheese are good. Also, a little dog meat does not do any harm. Remove the wheel a few days before birth, and do not handle either the mother or babies while she is nursing. If you touch the babies or make the mother feel threatened or alarmed in any way, she will eat her babies. It is also normal for her to eat ones she instinctively knows will not survive. Do not touch the young or change the shavings before they are 2 weeks old.
