Question
We have only had our male syrian hamster for a week, he has been absolutely fine - nesting and eating - coming to us to when we speak to him.  But this evening I have noticed his back end is wet. He doesn't seem at all ill or not like himself but do you thing he is poorly and are we expecting too much of him and not giving him enough time to settle?  If so what should we do - does he need to see the vet?

Answer
yes. you need to see a vet as soon as possible. It seems that your hamster has a bacterial infection, that is common in hamsters. It's also called wettail. It can be from stress, or can come from other hamsters since it is contagious. I would see if you can find a small animal vet and look into getting him some antibiotics from the vet. The sooner you take him to a vet the better. Make sure he is also drinking water as they will generally die because they do not eat or drink and giving them water from a dropper does help, even though they hate it. Good luck with everything.
