Sorry to hear your hamster has escaped.  They are great climbers and don't have problems getting off a shelf.  I had a hamster that climbed/fell from a height of about 5ft - she was fine and I found her a day later.

I'm assuming you haven't found him yet?  Check behind any furniture and in cupboards - call his name maybe you can hear him.  The best time to do this is in the evening when he is likely to be awake - otherwise if you try to find him during the day he will be sleeping somewhere.  Hamsters can get in tiny areas - under doors etc. so you need to look everywhere for a sign he's been there - any bedding, chewed carpets, hamster poop etc.  When you go to bed, put a small amount of food on the floor of the room and keep the door closed.  If any food disappears, then you know he's in that room so you can search again.  You can then set a trap for him - get a bucket, put some of his bedding the bottom with some of his food, then make a 'stairway' of books etc. up to the top of the bucket and put one or two treats on these steps.  The hamster will following the trail and hopefully when he smells the food in the bucket, drop into the bucket.  Make sure there is enough bedding in the bucket so he doesn't hurt himself.  Remember that they can only climb an inch or two, so the 'steps' up to the top of the bucket need to be quite small.

Good luck - do let me know if he turns up.
