Question
My hamster is hiccuping/sneezing/sqeuaking after my aunt dropped him on the floor. I am not sure if it is squeaks or sneezing or hiccuping but i think its hiccuping or sneezing. My guinea pig died not too long ago so I am being very careful with my new hamster and am trying to be a good mom to him. He still eats and drinks and walks around fine but is just acting a little bit different after being dropped. He used to always run away from me when I woke him up to hold him (because he's new and isn't used to me) but now just sits there. I'm thinking maybe it's because he has bruises and it hurts to move maybe for him. Well that's all that is wrong with him. I doubt it's anything serious but if it continues for long I'll ask my parents about taking him to the vet. If there is any info you can give me please do.

Answer
Hamsters are quite tough little creatures - but perhaps the fall has winded him.

The main thing to look for if a hamster suffers an injury like this is:  do his legs look OK - i.e. not dragging any when walking around.  Does he cry/squeak when being handled?  Does he still run in his wheel?  Is he sitting quietly hunched up, not wanting to move?  Is he eating/drinking normally?  Based on what you've said, he seems to be OK, in that he is eating/drinking.  Some hamsters are vocal and do squeak or make sounds.

I would suggest you keep an eye on him over the next few days and see if he returns to his old self.  Give him lots of love and handle him a lot in order to gain his confidence.  If he appears to be getting worse, or if he goes very quiet in that he doesn't want to move, or he stops eating, then you should get him to a vet just to make sure he didn't injure any internal organ when he fell.

Do let me know how you get on.
