Question
QUESTION: hello!
i was reading that you were rated as one of the most helpful people when it comes to small animals.
that is great because i need your help.
i am 16 and i have a female guinea pig. she is just over a year old. about maybe 2 months ago i realized that she was bleeding. and i called the vet and she said that female guinea pigs get a heat cycle every 21 days but that they will try to clean it up themselves. that was fine. so its around that time again.. and i noticed that last week she like expelled this bloody brown thing and it was like rubber. she was eating it and so i took it away from her. she was acting completely fine and has been eating and drinking normally the whole time. i didn't know if it was a blood clot. i think she is okay but i just wanted to check!
one last thing why do guinea pigs dig in there shavings. i have noticed that my little baby has been digging in her shavings lately. its almost like she is looking for something. i am not sure. hope fully you can help me out with that!
thanks so much!

ANSWER: Hello Carly,
guinea pigs don't have periods though. that's really sttrange that she was bleeding. You've had her for a year right? If you had her for a year than it can't be what is called an after birth since you have to be pregnant for that to happen. I can't possibly explain what that was at all. I've never really heard of anything like this before, very weird. I can't find anything like it in my reference books either. The only thing I can maybe assume is that maybe some of the blood formed a clot and she just now passed it. I'm glad she seems fine and happy though. That's always a good sign.

As far as the digging goes a lot of animals just have fun digging. They do it for no reason, you would think once they reach the bottom a few times that they would stop digging but nope they get a lot of fun out of it. :)

Thank for the compliments that you gave me in the beginning of your mail as well. I am sorry that I couldn't help you with your first question.

QUESTION: hello
thanks for the follow up and your welcome conserning the compliments. yeah i dont knoww.. the vet said that they get a heat cycle every 21 days. weird! i am hoping that it was a blood clot like you said..
yeahh and she seems fine.. thanks for the answer on her digging. its such a cute thing to watch! yeahh and no problem about the first question, but do you think that i should bring her in or do you think she will be okay?
one more thingg.. how to do tell if a guinea pig is hot.. and i just moved into the basement and i have a dehumidafier so its not damp but do you think she will be okay with the change. she is on a carpeted floor with a towel under her cage! its really hot outside so i thought it would be better. just was wondering if you think that she will be okayy! and why does my baby lick me when i hold her.. and snuggle at my neckk?
thankss for answering all my questionss..

Answer
I don't think there is a real emergency to bring her in since she's acting normal. If she passes something like that again put it in a ziplock bag and save it so you can bring it to the vet so the vet can look at it.

As far as her being hot it's best to make sure she's in a cool place and right now it's almost summer time and very hot and dry outside in most places so I think keeping her inside is good. Generally if they get too hot they will go into shock and act sick. As long as the basement is cool she should be fine.
Your guinea pig licking you and snuggling at your neck means she is found of you and loves you. :) She's showing affection. :)
