Question
Hi Katie,
We adopeded 2 dwarf hamsters about 3 weeks ago. We believe they have mated. This b/c she has become really moody, eating/drinking alot, sleeping more, and gained alot of weight. I think she is ready to give birth in the next few days b/c she had been really paying attention and cleaning in that area all day today. Her back legs are in the "stread eagle" postion. She also keeps on rolling to her side while cleaning.
My question is what should I do if she doesn't have the babies in the cage? She has been spending all her time in a "potty" attactment. Should we take that attactment off or leave it? And what should I expect when she does give birth?
Thanks,
Jessica

Answer

Just let her give birth where ever she wants to. When the babies come I suggest feeding the mother hard boiled egg to keep up her protein. Also make sure you clean the cage before she gives birth, because the cage cannot be cleaned until after the babies are three weeks old.
