Question
my female robo spins. i know there is something wrong with her brain that's why she does this involuntary thing, according to some research i've done.  what i want to know is if even she has this disability, would she still be able to breed? is it advisable? will she be able to take care of her pups?
thanks so much

Answer
Hi Bunny,

Roborovskis are fairly new to the pet industry, compared to the other hamster species and because of this they havent really had the chance to become plagued by abnormal health conditions caused by irresponsible breeding.  So i am surprised you have a Roborovskis which spins!

Spinning is a condition which can be passed down to a hamsters baby so please, please, please DO NO BREED FROM THIS HAMSTER!!  She would probably pass it down to her babies and it could also stop her from looking after her babies correctly.

Breeding hamsters should be about improving the breed and creating more hamsters which spin is not improving the breed!!

As you asking this question, it sounds as if you dont know very much about hamsters at all so i would recommend you to forget about breeding - at least until you have spent some quality time researching the subject!

Breeding hamsters is not just a case of putting together a Male and Female and hoping for the best!

You should never breed from hamsters who are from a pet shop - only from responsible breeders who can give you all of the background information about the hamsters history.  You should neve breed from hamsters who are not 100% healthy! and definately not hamsters who spin!!  You need to make sure the male and female are not related and also that both hamsters are at the correct age for breeding!

There is so much to think about before you start breeding hamsters!  The above is just the tip of the iceburg!

The could be problems during the birth and the babies could die - you could even end up losing the mother also!  You them ned to find homes for all of the babies who may all need to live in separate cages if they fight!!

etc. etc.!!!!

Tammy
