Question
ok. so i "had" two dwarf hamsters. i got them from petco. they were koko and kiwi (both females). THey got along well too.I've had them both for almost 2 months (since march 13). But sadly, last monday, koko died. it was a weird death, so sudden. anywayz. I remember seeing the hamster awake and running on its wheel as usual. then like a couple hours later it was dead in the corner where they usually sleep. Ok. So when i found the dead hamster, they were both sleeping, i dont even think kiwi knew what happened.I removed kiwi immediately into the little travel cage. Recently kiwi has been strange. She just goes into this corner, and sits there. sometimes she lays down but has her eyes open. But its weird because she sleeps way across the cage opposite from where koko died. she sleeps in her new corner and nvr goes over to where she used to sleep. and she doesnt like to be held anymore and doesnt exercise in the wheel anymore! only sometimes. but its just slumps in the new corner and does nothing! whats wrong with kiwi?

Answer

It sounds like your hamster is suffering from depression, which is normal after they lose a cage mate. Usually hamsters are loners but when they live together like that it really affects them when a friend dies. Just keep holding and comforting her, this could make her feel better, but it may take time.

Hope this helped, thanks for writing.
