Answer
Hi Mattiey,

Yes, this is normal.  Hamsters' teeth are always growing, so they need something to chew on.  Be sure to give your hamsters plenty of chew toys (sold at pet stores).  Also, you can give your hamster a vegetable wheel.

Since chewing on metal bars can cause problems with the hamster's mouth, and it can rub the fur off the hamster's nose, you should try to stop it.  Buy Bitter Lime Spray (or Gel) at the pet store.  It's marketed towards ferrets, so it'll be in the ferret section, but it's safe for all small animals.  Spray or rub the Bitter Lime on the bars of the cage.  If your hamster tries to chew on the bars, he'll taste the Bitter Lime and be disgusted.  You may have to use the Bitter Lime a few times, but your hamster should soon get the idea.

As far as petting him - make sure you're very gentle with him.  When you go to pick him up out of the cage, make sure he sees your hand first.  Then, gently scoop him out of the cage with both hands.  Let him run back and forth in your hands - don't try to keep him still.  Sit down on the floor when you're handling him; nervous hamsters may jump, and if you're sitting on the floor, he won't have far to fall.  Handle him for only about 10-15 minutes at a time.

Have a great weekend!
