Question
I had a serian hamster for 1 year and she died the other night i have had other hamsters before her but i always knew how they died and they were all around the age of 2-2and a half years old. I went up to feed her some of her food on sunday night and she eats a mash made of weetabix, cornflakes, oats, teaspoon of milk & water i would drain the mash before i'd give it to her so that it would just stick together. i only gave her this food because it was the only food she would eat. i also put vitemin drops in her food and water it said to give 27 drops per day but gave her 9 in each water bottle and 2 in her food so altogether she would have 20 a day. i changed her sawdust to sawdust pelletts called "butipet" it said it was sutibal for hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, guinne pigs, chinchillas and other small pets it also said it was naturally pine fresh, biodegradable, dust free and ultra absorbent. i would be very grateful if you wolud replie to me as soon as possibal as i am very upset my dad thinks that she ate one of the sawdust pelletts and because they were ultra absorbent the sucked in all the things in her stomach but i would like expert addvice please respond to Emer lawlor aged 13 years old. thank you.

Answer
Hey
Sounds like you looked after your hamster well, very well. but sometimes hamsters just get ill for no reason so theres not really a reason for why your hamster could have died.
some diseases are hereditary, so it could be that she got whatever killed her from her parents, who probably died of the same cause. sadly sometimes hamsters are inter bred which is not good for them and can shorten life as well.
i can assure you that it doesn't sound like anything you have done, and it probably could not have been stopped. in england i don't think we have these sawdust pellets, so i'm not sure what they are, but i usually use sawdust flakes for mine, and there is no reason to why she would have eaten the pellets if she was getting her food.
 i'm sorry i can't help much more.
