clicking noises

Question
my hamster is about 10 weeks old and is making this awfully strange clicking sound when she breathes. it almost sounds as if she has a nasel congestion. the only thing is, is that she has no runny nose and there is no indication of a cold. i don't know if i should give her a check-up at the vet. i think it would be good for her but my dad says it's a waste of "money". my step mom thinks it's a good idea. if you can give me some advice that would be great.

thanx,
selia

Answer
hi selia,

i dont think this noise will be much to worry about, its simply 'hamster language'. the clicking noise usually indicates that she is quite happy and content. tho you didnt say what she wasdoing when making these noises, was she sorting through food? were u playing with her? if so its just her way of saying 'im quite happy here'.

however, if it is ALL the time, non-stop and any other things begin to happen, such as lack of energy, not eating or drinking, go to the vets.

im rather suprised by your dads attitude to your pet though. whats the point of getting a pet, if you wont take it to the vets when its sick? i have no doubt that you want your hamster to be happy and are looking after her well, but your dad needs to realise, pets come with prices and shouldnt have gotten one if he doesnt want to pay for her now and again.

you and your step mother are right, if you are still worried about this noise, do take her to the vets. and trust me when i say this, shes a small animal and wont cost a fortune like dogs and cats do.

thank you very much for your question, and good luck with your hamster. feel free to ask again!

joanne :)
