Hamsters - Dwarf

Question
Hey Tammy,

I don't know if you remember me, you must be asked so many questions. I had two little Campbells and they fought and I asked about getting another cage, you asked me to let you know how they got on. I also have another question if that is ok.

My hamsters Pip & Ham are doing very well in their separate cages. Ham who was bullied is now a little contented hamster and she loved running around although she is not as active as the other one, she's a little fat actually, I call her chunkybut, I feed he less than Pip who loves exercising and I have put Ham on little diets, she is still big though so I figured she is just a chunky hamster. She is much better now though and is even more adventurous and is no longer as timid and shy as she used to be, which is great. Sorry for rambling on, I'll get to the question:

I was thinking about getting another hamster since I love my two so much, I would love to stick to the Dwarf species as i find them so fascinating and they make great little entertaining pets. I was wondering whether you knew about or could give me some advice about how to find Winter Whites. I know they are rare but I would like to experience owning one but I can't seem to find them anywhere, have you any ideas, I live in Benfleet, Essex.
Also I like Robo's, what are they like to handle??

Thanks for your time, I know you are busy so I will leave it at that and will look forward to your answer. I hope I find you well.

Thanks very much

xxxxxx

Answer
Hi Amy,

i am glad your hamsters are doing ok - sometimes it is best to split them up to give both of them a good quality of life.

If you are thinking about getting more dwarfs then please be prepared to have to split them up again!  Or, just get one!  As you have found out, they do get on ok living alone and adjust to it fine - so it might just be best to get one in the beggining?

Winter Whites are lovely pets when handled the correct way and given enough attention - just like any other hamster, but Winter Whites can breed with Russian Campbells so most hamsters being sold as Winter Whites are usually hybrids between the two!  I dont suppose it matters what you get really - as long as you arent planning on breeding them  - they will all make great pets if given the chance - just make sure that if you do really want pure Winter Whited then make sure you go to a proffessional and responsible breeder!

Roborovskis are lovely hamsters and so pretty too!  but i am biased lol!  They make lovely pets, but they are more of a look at pet, rather than a pet to handle - they are the smallest and fastest species of hamster, so they can be difficult to handle and tame. - but they are great to watch - so entertaining!

Kind Regards,

Tammy
