Answer
Hey...:-)
right..you can't tell if your hamster is pregnant unless you put her with the male 4 days after she mated, if she mates again, then shes not pregnant, and if she wont, then its likely she is. you can do this at 8 days as well to be sure, but not after. She won't go into heat while shes pregnant.
You don't need to do much for a pregnant hamster, make sure she has plenty of food, especially protein like you said...this is found in boiled egg, nuts and cheese (small amounts of cheese becuase of the fat content).
You need to clean her out 3 days before she gives birth, don't touch her after this. don't use fluff bedding either, tissue paper is best. you can take out her little house if you want to, she might not use it anyways, so wait and see!
so once you've cleaned her out don't touch her til about 5 days after the babies are born. You'll know they are there becuase you'll hear tiny squeaks or creaks from the nest, try not to disturb her too much or she might eat them.they usually have about 6-10 babies
At five days you can take her out to play for short times, but don't touch the nest at all.and you also need to start feeding the babies solid food,i use porridge oats for mine to start with, but give extra hamster food as well as small peices of carrot or apple, leave it near the nest in the cage.
you can't touch the babies until they are 2 and a half weeks(this includes cleaning out), or at least when they are wandering about the cage. they will open their eyes at 14-16 days, and from then on they need to be handle regularly.
They need to come from mum at 21-25 days depending on how she is towards them. they can go into a communal cage until 30 days, then they need to go into same sex cages to prevent in-breeding.
then at 4 or 5 weeks, the pet shop will take them, or they can be sold/given away to their new homes!:-D
ok i think thats everything!! :-D
