Question
HELLO,

I was just curious, what will possibly happen if you dont cut your
hamsters nails at all? Or its impossible to cut them yourself if
they keep squirming around?
Will it fall off and then grow back? Is that healthy?
Or will they nibble the tips off there selves?

Answer
Hi Susie,

If your hamster's nails are too long, it's very uncomfortable, even painful, for him.  It makes normal activities - such as running on a wheel and climbing tubes - difficult.

If your hamster's nails are too long, you can take him to the vet for a clipping.  Or, if you have someone to help you, you can try it yourself.  Have someone hold the hamster while clipping only the tips of the nails with a small clipper.  Be very careful not to clip too much of the nail.  (It's kind of difficult to clip a hamster's nails, especially if you've never done it before, so I would recommend going to a vet instead.)

Have a great day!
