cleaning hamsters fur

Question
My daughter has a short golden haired hamster.  Occasionally she will complain that her hamster stinks.  She is wanting to buy either the spray or cleaning wipes for hamsters available at most stores.  Is this a good idea?  It says on the bottle that it will not harm the hamster, but would hate to find out otherwise.  I have read ALL of the questions on the board, and no one has asked this particular question.  Is the spray/wipes really NOT harmful to hamster's?

Answer
Pet stores sell alot of things they say "aren't harmful"...ever see those cotton fluff bedding packs they sell? Or pretty much any plastic habitrail cage? These are very bad for hamsters. Cotton fluff bedding causes a choking hazard, and if a small fiber of it wraps around your hams feet, it can cause the limb to lose bloodflow, and possibly lead to permanent damage. Hamsters are meant to keep themselves clean. If your animal has an unpleasant odor, it is likely due to the surroundings (I.E, the litter being unclean). Even if you don't see feces in the litter, the hamster's urine still has a potent stink. Also if you have a female hamster, they become musky smelling every week due to their "in heat" cycle. If you really must clean your animal, do it with a wet, unused toothbrush, and leave the chemicals on the shelf :)
