brown, sticky stuff

Question
yo I was wondering what's this brown, orange stuff that's sticky and smells? Whenever I clean my long hair hamster's cage, there appears to be this, slime, at the botton. I'm not sure if it's urine or what. Help me please.

Answer
Hi Andrea,

It sounds like that's urine at the bottom of the cage.  If you want to potty-train her, you can buy hamster litter at the pet store (or *unscented* cat litter).  (You can also buy a hamster potty, but that's not absolutely necessary.)  Pour some litter in a corner of the cage.  Then, with a plastic spoon or something like that, scoop up some soiled bedding and place it on top of the litter.  Hopefully, your hamster will take the hint and begin using the bathroom in the litter.  Then, you can change the litter every 2 days.  It makes the weekly cage-cleaning process a lot faster and easier.  And the cage doesn't smell badly.

Have a great day!
